Staying Cool This Summer

It is important to stay prepared for extreme heat events and to stay safe. You can stay informed by looking at your local news and weather forecasts and watching for extreme heat alerts.
Adults 65 and older are more vulnerable to heat stress. Follow these key tips to avoid heat illness:
- Have an extreme heat plan – watch your weather forecasts and heat advisories. Drink plenty of water throughout the day and wear light, loose clothing.
- Know the signs – heat exhaustion includes sweating, weakness, nausea, and headache. If you are suffering from heat stroke, seek medical attention immediately.
- Have family, friends, or neighbors check in on you during extreme heat events.
- Check your medications – Talk to your healthcare provider to see if any of your medications affect your body’s ability to regulate temperature.
- Have a to do list prepared in extreme heat – charge medical devices in case of power outage, look after pets, and make sure you have plenty of water stored in your home.
- Keep cool during the summer. Know where your local cooling center is located and where to find transportation. Set your A/C to 75 – 80 degrees F.
